Sara Brown Cockrell | Owner, Lead Stylist

After growing up in Kilmarnock and graduating from St. Margaret’s School in Tappahannock, Sara attended the College of Charleston in South Carolina. While working part-time at an upscale salon in Charleston, Sara decided to leave college and focus instead on a career as a hair stylist. After earning her license, Sara perfected her craft through experience working for top-rated Charleston salons and ongoing professional training.

Sara returned to Kilmarnock and opened Sara Brown Salon in 2008. “My dad suggested that I look at a 1920s vintage house at 320 South Main Street as a possible location for my own salon. I bought it. My family and friends pitched in and helped me renovate it so I could open for business,” says Sara.

Fast forward ten years later. “I decided to celebrate my tenth year in business by investing in my business.” Sara worked with local architect Randall Kipp and his interior designer Lauren Davenport to transform the salon's interior, creating a thoroughly modern look that distinguishes Sara Brown Salon from other area salons.

In addition to a full range of salon services, Sara Brown Salon also offers Aveda hair products which are made from naturally derived ingredients. “I respect and support Aveda’s mission,” says Sara. “To care for the world we live in, from the products we make to the ways in which we give back to society.”

Kimberly Stevens | Lead Stylist

Kimberly joined Sara Brown Salon in 2009. “I’ve evolved with my clients. One day I’m styling a bride-to-be’s hair for her wedding and then several years later I’m giving her baby girl her first haircut,” says Kimberly.

Really listening to a client is essential to achieving the look they want and expect from Kimberly. “My goal for every client is to make them feel pampered during their time with me. I want them to walk out of the salon feeling beautiful!”

Kimberly embraces ongoing educational opportunities so she can offer her clients the best possible salon experience. “I take advantage of the advance training courses offered through Aveda such as learning new hair-cutting techniques and creating and formulating innovative hair color looks.”

Olive Thomas | Stylist

Olive was still a student at the Dominion School of Hair Design when she began working at Sara Brown Salon in 2017. “I have been mentored and trained by the best. Not only have I learned valuable techniques, I’ve learned how to help clients in their decision-making process.”

Today, as a licensed stylist, Olive is enthusiastic about building her own clientele base. “I understand that every person is unique. I want to help each client discover their potential through make-up, expert cuts and color.”

Janet Christopher | Salon Manager

A busy salon requires an organized manager who schedules appointments, makes reminder calls, greets clients and helps keep everybody happy. At Sara Brown Salon, that would be Janet.

Janet’s friendly smile, relaxed demeanor and can-do attitude sets the tone for the Sara Brown Salon client experience. “I do everything I can to ensure that clients enjoy their visits to Sara Brown Salon. It’s their time to be pampered,” says Janet.
