SARA COCKRELL, Owner, Lead Stylist

Many business owners had to quickly adapt to COVID-19 restrictions and put customer and staff protective measures in place to do business. “Not so at Sara Brown Salon,” says owner Sara Cockrell.

“We’ve always taken a very structured approach at Sara Brown Salon where cleanliness is a top priority,” says Sara. “We masked up, scheduled client appointments to maintain social distancing requirements, and got down to the business of making our clients look and feel beautiful.”

After growing up in Kilmarnock and graduating from St. Margaret’s School in Tappahannock, Sara attended the College of Charleston in South Carolina. While working part-time at an upscale salon in Charleston, Sara decided to leave college and focus instead on a career as a hairstylist. After earning her license, Sara perfected her craft through experience working for top-rated Charleston salons and ongoing professional training.

Sara returned to Kilmarnock and opened Sara Brown Salon in 2008. “My dad suggested that I look at a 1920s vintage house at 320 South Main Street as a possible location for my own salon. I bought it. My family and friends pitched in and helped me renovate it so I could open for business,” says Sara.

In 2018, Sara worked with local architect Randall Kipp and his interior designer Lauren Davenport to transform the salon’s interior, creating a thoroughly modern look that distinguishes Sara Brown Salon from other area salons.

“After more than ten years in business, I have a salon environment that reflects the sophisticated but casual Sara Brown Salon brand. My team of creative and professional stylists enthusiastically embrace learning about — and delivering — the latest techniques in cuts and color. And my support staff is always friendly and accommodating,” says Sara.
